RenegadeS and Pirate Kingdoms

Introduction

Beneath the veneer of a civilized society, there is always an substrate of individuals who leave behind the constraints of law and order, choosing instead a life of rebellion and piracy. These outlaws, collectively known as Renegades, are a diverse and ruthless collection of deserters, criminals, and freedom-seekers who have turned their backs on the structured empires of the galaxy to seek their fortunes out for themselves rather than having others dictate their fates. These renegades are not bound by allegiance to any one system or creed, instead forming loose alliances that ebb and flow with the tides of opportunity and conflict.

At the heart of Renegade activity lies the infamous Pirate Kingdoms—autonomous realms carved out by those who have risen to power through cunning, force, and sheer will. These Kingdoms are not merely havens for outlaws; they are powerhouses in their own right, wielding influence and control over vast swathes of space far beyond their own borders. Despite their differences, these kingdoms are united by a common cause—the pursuit of freedom on their terms, away from the prying eyes and oppressive laws of the larger galactic powers. These forces represent the ultimate challenge to the established order—a constant thorn in the side of governments and a beacon of hope for those who seek a life unfettered by the chains of society. But their existence is a precarious one, for the galaxy is vast and unforgiving, and the line between freedom and oblivion is razor-thin.

Sub-factions

The Pirate Kingdoms—like all forces under the broader title of “Renegades” in Novan terms, are a ragtag coalition of scoundrels, miscreants and nerdowells from all across Novan space. However, while the myriad of forces within Pirate space may run the gamut in type and disposition, the core three Pirate Kingdoms (and the reason that this area of space even bears the name of Pirate Kingdoms) have more structure and even one might say, cultural identity, than the ragtag scum and villains they may harbor within their borders.

Erebus
Erebus is the smallest in terms of territory of all the pirate kingdoms, but they maintain the greatest number of holdings outside of the borders of the 3 kingdoms, having many uncharted bases and lars in the dark corners of Novan space. As such, they draw tribute from across the breadth of the Commonwealth and have many powerful connections within Novan space—having bribed and threatened their way into positions of power within the very fabric of the Novan Great houses.

Contego

Contego is well known to have the greatest contingent of ground forces of all the Pirate Kingdoms. They employ numerous detachments of former Novan Elites who have left the conflicts within the great houses and now style themselves as mercenaries, or gentlemen of fortune. Contego specializes not in raiding shipping as do the other pirate kingdoms, but instead on preying on isolated Novan settlements and beleaguered planetary governments who are weak and easily bullied into rendering tribute. Those who resist can expect to be swiftly crushed in lightning planetary offensives that leave little but smoldering wreckage in their wake.

Poseidon

Poseidon is the largest of the Pirate Kingdoms in terms of territory. They distinguish themselves as the primary shipyards of the pirate kingdoms and their distinctive angular hulls are a common enough site throughout Novan space where they are rightly feared for their ability to appear out of nowhere and disappear once again into the shadows of deep space.

Poseidon is also the primary builder of the Deadfall cores common to most pirate vessels. This specialty has made them invaluable to all 3 of the Kingdoms and has made them incalculably wealthy.

Unsurprisingly, Poseidon is known to have the largest standing fleet of the three kingdoms.
